Andre 3000 Alter Ego: Mixtape 802061514522 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
Since OutKast’s Idewild, something has been clicking for Andre 3000. Always great, the 30-something, defiantly sober half of the Atlanta pioneers has
released about a dozen songs, mostly through remixes, features and compilation work that have made him arguably the best MC in hip-hop ever
since. The Trapaholics compile these rarities, which include Jay’s rare remix with Ice Cube, the upcoming “Royal Flush” with Big Boi and Raekwon,
and some other local favorites that make the case. The material is strictly within the last two years, which critics say are his best. Few rappers have
more personality than Three Stacks, and that comes alive on this milestone mixtape.
Gucci Mane Trap Tacular 802061501522 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
Say what you want about Gucci Mane’s limited vocab. The thick-drawled rapper does what he does with his choice few terms. Even though “cash” and
“ice” and all things synonymous as the only topics covered over the 23 tracks, Gucci’s verses stay fairly entertaining. A couple of guests - Mannie
Fresh does his thing on the jaunty “Would You Love Me” and Montana Da Mac does likewise on “Rock Solid” - shoot through. Surprising to no one,
they rarely sprinkle new words from the dictionary in their rhymes. But hey, freaky girls don’t have the time to translate many three-syllable words
anyway.
Lil Wayne/Raj Smoove Young Money All Stars 802061509320 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
Of the three DJ’s Lil Wayne endorsed this month, Raj Smoove is one of them. The longtime collaborators linked this time to showcase some of the
talent on Wayne’s own imprint, Young Money Records. Of course Weezy is the star of the show - and label, with re-playable efforts like “100 Winters”
and “I Got” being creative jump-offs for the New Orleans rapper. Proteges Currency and Ack Maine swing through as well to show you what respects
in an artist, as they plug away on their own albums. Although it’s more Wayne than supporting cast, it’s safe to say that that’s a gift, hardly a flaw.
Mos Def Audio 3 786984041924 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
At one point in time Mos Def was hailed as one of Hip-Hop’s next great artists. Throughout the years, however, his career has taken shifts and turns
that have seen him move on to ventures in singing and acting. Audio 3 takes a look back at why Mos was once so heralded as an MC. There’s
significantly more rapping than singing on this album and numerous Mos Def classics are included, most notably Ms. Fat Booty, The Body Rock, 2
Words and Seven Days. Although his influence may not be what it once was, the talent that brought him to the top can’t be denied.
Plies Truth Hurts 802061526822 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
Although Plies has successfully become a rap superstar in less than one year, his core fan-base was built upon his ruthless truth-telling. On issues
of crime, race and justice, Plies is aligned with N.W.A. and The Geto Boys for a no-nonsense approach. As his stardom has dusted that to the side
of his mainstream releases, efforts like The Truth Hurts allow fans to see, and hear, what the Tallahassee rapper has to tell them. “Never Tell” is the
antithesis, a code against snitching, whereas “Kno Sumthin’” pushes for awarenes. Sex songs and bragging finds its way on here, but its Plies hardnosed
approach that got him here.
Rich Boy Bigger Than The Mayor 802061514225 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
In just one year, Rich Boy went from a relatively unknown rapper to a big time player in the hip-hop industry and it all started with his mega-single
“Throw Some D’s” in 2007. Ever since his breakthrough success, the southern artist has been the talk of the town and his latest collection Bigger
Than The Mayor justifies the chatter. Coming across as a well-constructed studio album, Bigger Than The Mayor is a polished gem with an assortment
of bangers including “Ghetto Queen,” “Mrs. Pacman” and “Wrist Out The Window.” With self-made production that is highly energetic and guest spots
from up-and-comers Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, Young Gotti and 334 Mobb, Rich Boy is certainly a big time player.
Soulja Boy Supaman 802061509726 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
The Man of Steel has a problem with kryptonite. Soulja Boy’s main weakness is probably hip hop takes itself too seriously. Here you’ll catch Mr.
“Crank That” doing his best to make 15-year-old girls grin with a host of free-spirited ditties like the outrageous “Yahoo Hoez” and silly “Just Got My
Report Card.” Songs like these have two effects on America’s youth: they spark memories of high school lunch rooms and they make dance floors
look like Tae Bo class with all of the dance instructions. Whatever the results, a cape won’t even help parents thinking of jumping from the ledge.
T.I. Thoughts Of A 8 Time Felon 802061509528 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
T.I.’s classic flow and charismatic southern drawl has made him a current favorite of Hip-Hop fans everywhere. He’s the emcee who you can’t wait to
hear on an artist’s remix, which is why Thoughts of an 8 Time Felon features a large number of those remixes, some hidden gems that you’d be hard
pressed to find elsewhere, along with a plethora of unreleased tracks. Whether he’s lacing Lupe Fiasco’s “Superstar” or Usher’s “Love In This Club”
with some of his originality, or taking a stab at “Hotel California” on “The Life,” T.I. never fails to remind people why his talents are so respected.
Tennessee Titans & Trap A Holics Tennessee Titans 802061509429 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
Don’t worry, Vince Young hasn’t ditched his football career to become a rapper. There’s a totally different kind of Tennessee Titan on this album - the
rapping kind. For those who are wondering what the volunteer state has to offer Hip-Hop fans, the Trap-A-Holics have put together this compilation
to whet your appetite for the scene. The music ranges greatly, from harder street influenced tracks to more laid back songs that feature R&B singers
crooning hooks. With so many people pigeonholing the south in tiny subgenres, Tennessee Titans looks to prove there’s more to the south than just
crunk.
Webbie N Lil Boosie Life As A Savage 802061509221 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
When you pick up a Webbie or Lil’ Boosie CD you know exactly what you’re going to get: a slice of southern Hip-Hop. Cars, money, hood talk and
loose women dominate their combined effort mix-CD, Life of a Savage, as the duo fill the album’s 31 tracks with everything that’s made them
household names over the past few years. A perfect accompaniment to a ride down the street on a steamy southern day, with Life of a Savage Webbie
and Lil’ Boosie have provided their spot on the map with a summer soundtrack for 2008.
Young Dro I Am Legend 802061514621 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
It’s funny that Dro would call this mix CD I Am Legend, after an apocalyptic movie a man who’s the last person on earth. From the sound of this joint,
Dro appears perfectly fine blending in with everyone else on 106 & Park. Known to the masses for his ’06 smash “Shoulder Lean,” the GA native with
the measured delivery isn’t quite going for Will Smith-like commercial appeal here. But his disc does make the usual rounds about smokin’ (“On A
Pill”), stackin’ (“I Know How To”) and stuntin’ (“These Ain’t Out Yet”). Just call it a Thug’s Pursuit of Happiness. And if you’ve wanted to hear the T.I.
protégé go hard over thunderous beats, you’ve found it.
Young Jeezy Down South Slangin’ 802061512320 $13.97 CD Rap/Hip Hop
Young Jeezy releases mixtapes faster than he shovels snow. On DJ Chuck T’s latest installment of Down South Slangin’, the lyrical snowman
becomes the centerpiece of the collection and sprinkles his signature raspy flow throughout the 29-track compilation, most of which features exclusive
freestyles over popular production and ruthless trap anthems. But being the rap ambassador that he is, Jeezy shares the mic with several other
southern hard hitters like Bun B, Boosie, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Yung Joc and Weezy. With such a star-studded lineup featured on this edition of
Down South Slangin’, it seems like Jeezy and Chuck T bring the best out of the dirty south.
